Twas the night before Christmas and all through the world…
Everyone was busy with everyday life
Not even realizing a Savior was about to be born.
Did that night feel any different from every other night?
Could they see any special stars in the sky?
Could they hear any angels warming up for the big announcement?
Did the shepherds sense the wonder that was about to unfold?
Did Mary and Joseph fully understand the need of this baby to be born
For the salvation of the lost and dying world.
Did they know of the pain their baby would have to endure
As He grew up strong and fine and…perfect
A sinless son…was it possible?
The night before Christmas was uncomfortable and long
As they tried to rest in strange conditions
Mary was not all tucked into her own bed and
Dreaming of sugarplums but instead
She pondered all these things in her heart.
Would they make it to Bethlehem in time for the birth?
Would she have any help with the delivery of the Christ child?
She just knew they would have a warm room and comfy bed
With Joseph at her side, there to greet God’s Son
And to pronounce His name Immanuel – God with us.
The night before Christmas would be the last night before
The world would have a Savior.
The last night before the man who would heal the sick and raise the dead would be born
The last night before a virgin would give birth to the Christ child.
It seemed like an ordinary night
The sky was dark, but for the moon and stars
People were making trips and making plans
Children dreamed dreams of Mom’s baking and fun with friends
Moms went to bed tired from a day of caring for their families.
Dad went to bed wondering if he had made enough money for all to be fed
The evil rulers watched their plan unfold to count the people of the world
To secure their control and to get as much of everyone’s money as they could
To lord over the Hebrews to keep them subdued
To get them to worship their royalty and authority
The night before Christmas…was the night before the Son of God stepped on to the scene
To show His amazing grace, love so divine
Tomorrow would come…and the world would never be the same.
God from heaven whispered to all…
Sleep well, for tomorrow a Savior will be born.
